Where Youth Disconnection Is Happening in Texas
The maps below use retrospective measures of persistent disconnection (see definitions) across Texas state House and Senate districts, as well as county-level data. The latter unit is the most numerous but also contains highly varied population sizes, which results in some small units that, in turn, tend to generate extreme values. The former are more equal in proportions of the sample and somewhat granular but are composed of arbitrary borders. The state legislative maps are interactive (hovering and zooming).
Analyzing these three maps together, several general patterns emerge. First, the areas bordering Louisiana to the East, the southern Gulf Coast region, and West Texas have the highest rates of disconnection. Meanwhile, suburban zones around Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin have the lowest rates. As we demonstrate in other sections, structural factors correlated with these locations can explain some of this variation.
